East Kerala Diocese

The Church Missionary Society began work in this area in 1848 and Rev. Henry Baker Junior came as the first missionary. He is now remembered as "The Apostle of the Hills". History tells that people from Melukavu met Rev. Henry Baker at Kottayam and said, “You must know we know nothing right. Will you teach us or not? We die like beasts and are buried like dogs! Ought you to neglect us? Cholera and fever carried off members of our family. Henry Baker decided to move eastward and mission work started immediately. The believers were persecuted by the local King’s servants - W.S. Hunt writes,"They were made to stand in water up to their necks, kept in stocks for days, chillies rubbed in their eyes, heads tied in bags filled with large black ants and red wood ants".

Our Congregation

As a growing Church we have about 65,000 members in the Diocese. Number of Churches - 237, Mission Fields -53, of which 3 are in the Slums of Delhi. Our growth in 25 years is more than 3 times in terms of number of Churches and efforts for Human Resource Development in rural areas.

Our People

Liberation became part of Baker's mission and is still a major part of our work today. When he began his work, untouchability, 'pollution by sight' and caste distinctions prevailed and human beings were bought and sold as slaves. Inspired by God’s love, Baker spent his whole life among these people, establishing places of worship, schools and shelters for the sick and dying. These were pioneering efforts to free lower castes from a state of servitude and shame.

Freedom to learn, to enter the premises of law courts, to own property in one's own name and freedom to worship all became realities. The new members of the Diocese are mostly from Tribal (Adivasi) and Dalit backgrounds, Tamil plantation labourers and other smaller communities. We are blessed with great cultural diversity and the richness of both Malayalam and Tamil languages. For many of these people the support and love of God's Church is their only hope for a better and more fulfilling life.

Our Land

The Diocese consists of mountains, peaks, valleys, rivers, deciduous and evergreen forests and is home for many tribes. We are blessed with scenic beauty that attracts tourists from all over the world, including:

  • Thekkady Wild life sanctuary and Thattekkadu bird sanctuaries
  • Hill Stations like Munnar, Devikulam and Peerumedu
  • Mountain slopes like Illikkakalu, Chellar Coil and Elaveezha Poonchira
  • Idukki forest area with 51 mission fields.
  • Tea gardens with challenges of agriculture and livelihood.

Although abundant with gifts of nature, the Diocese is also prone to natural disasters such as drought, heavy storms and landslides. The temperature in our lowlands rarely falls below 32°C but can commonly reach freezing at night in the high ranges.

The Apostle of the Hills

The Church Missionary Society began work in this area in 1848 and Rev. Henry Baker Junior came as the first missionary. He is now remembered as "The Apostle of the Hills". History tells that people from Melukavu met Rev. Henry Baker at Kottayam and said, "You must know we know nothing right. Will you teach us or not? We die like beasts and are buried like dogs! The believers were persecuted by the local King’s servants - W.S. Hunt writes," They were made to stand in water up to their necks, kept in stocks for days, chillies rubbed in their eyes, heads tied in bags filled with large black ants and red wood ants".

And yet when let loose they learned the Gospel from the missionaries again. Unlike any other society we are "a people who grabbed the Gospel from Missionaries".

CSI East Kerala Diocese Sunday School Camp 2019 Held at HRDT Centre Melukavumattom

CSI East Kerala Diocese Sunday School Camp for the year 2019, was held on September 8th to 10th at HRDT Centre Melukavumattom. Sunday School children, teachers, missionaries, church workers and Achens participated in the camp. There were around 825 participants present in the camp. Rt. Rev. V. S. Francis, the Bishop in East Kerala Diocese of the Church of South India (CSI) presided over the inaugural function and Inaugurated the camp. He emphasized that the children are the future of our nation, they should be firm in faith and their primary faith in God will not change according to the changes in this present-day world. There is a huge challenge of bad effects of modern media among the children. They should have the discerning capacity to choose the right one and use it for the glory of God. The faith we received from our missionaries and forefathers should lead us in the present time and the future ahead. Bishop reminded that God has helped us thus far, will help us now and forever.

The theme of the camp was ‘Ebenezer- This far the Lord has helped us’. Rev. Sunil Raj Philip (Director, Communication & Dalit and Adivasi Department, CSI Synod) presented the theme and reminded the children to be thankful to God in life, we should not forget the past and we are the generation to stand for the faith in this world and stressed that memories and thankfulness are essentials of Christian life. Rev. rAnilal M. Jose (South Kerala Diocese), Rev. P. C. Mathewkutty (Diocesan Treasurer, CSI EKD) and Rev. Dr. Benoy P. Jacob (CSI EKD) gave leadership to the different sessions in the camp. CSI EKD Music Symphony Team led the singing sessions in the camp.

There were classes on CSI Church and its liturgy, responsible use of social media, the importance of worshipping God, Jesus; the super Hero of Children and Teens, Life; the greatest gift and there were interactives sessions and games. The camp concluded on 10th afternoon with a dedication session led by our Bishop, Rt. Rev. V. S. Francis. Children recited the pledge with the Bishop by dedicating their life in service of God, stating that I believe in the God of Trinity, I will leave away all the immoral things, I will not use any drugs, I won’t be the slave for modern media, I will stand for social justice and wellbeing of all, I will protect the God created nature. A framed Ten Commandments was gifted to all the participants in the camp as a compliment. Rev. Biju Joseph; the Clgy Secretary of the Diocese, and Mr. Thomas Varghese Ranni, felicitated the camp and many other priests and Church Workers blessed the camp with their valuable prayers and presence. We thank all of them, especially the resource persons and the people who worked hard for the effective functioning of this camp. We also remember the hard work of all nine associate secretaries Achens and the district leaders and all the people who joined their hand together for the success of this camp.

Yours in His Service
